While looking up a reminder of how much sugar to fruit for making jam I came across a tip that to pick them run a fork down the stalks, and it really is so much quicker I have bowls full in half the time. So now I have made the jam I might get quite a few frozen before the birds finish them off.

Margate

Interesting article Dr Moores seems to be in conflict with the thoughts of his leader.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/apr/20/ukcrime.communities

Rambling

This post may ramble a bit as I have just come back from a jolly good night out but am now sitting here thinking. The sight of the ripped up Shannon Matthews posters started me off.
When I was working in a London stockbrokers during the 1960's I was quickly promoted to supervisor but all of the boys/men that worked for me got paid so much more than the girls for the same job that when one man got paid more than me I handed my notice in. I immediately got a big pay rise, due to my explanation that my eggs and butter were no cheaper than his. But the girls did not do any better, my very selfish thoughts at that age was that was their look out.
In the early 1990's I had moved to Ramsgate and my attitude to Margaret Thatcher was that she agreed that women's lib was rubbish but women needed to fight for their rights themselves and that was a good thing.
However she was to visit Ramsgate and I watched a television crew, who were bored with waiting for her, arrange a local demonstration and their police escort, who were equally as bored, in to a really good rant with the police holding them back ( what from ?)so that they could get some good pictures. When Maggie finally arrived it was much more subdued.
So what I am getting at is did people really rip up posters and celebrate without help from the press or did they just mumble 'that's a good thing' to themselves.
I think I had better go to bed now - god help me in the morning.

Guns in Thanet

Following the murder in Margate this morning, it made me think, we don't very often hear of gun crime in Thanet. Went to stay with my daughter on Thursday and decided to do some family research around the City all day on Friday including ancient burial grounds. I got chucked out of Guildhall Library at 5pm and decided to look at the Art Gallery, which was a mistake as they were really closed too, and I got myself caught up in a private viewing but the artist was nice and the wine welcome by that time.
On Saturday my daughter walked me all over the Isle of Dogs which was lovely but I told her I didn't need my coat (would she listen!)
Today I just feel unable to move but with weather like this I had to go into the garden. I took a saw with me thinking I might cut some overgrown trees down a bit on the border with next door a quick attempt and I knew I didn't have the energy, but, with luck the neighbour was out too and said pass me the saw and I'll do it from this side. So with little effort on my part the garden is looking much better - now that's what I call gardening.

Crocuses and snowdrops with daffodils to follow - Happy Days

Ramsgate Harbour

I came across an interesting observation from 1797.

This harbour is intended as a place of refuge for ships in the frequent hard gales of wind from south-east to east-north-east, when they are exposed to the greatest danger in the Downs. To find out that it was 40 years ago that I went to the best gig I have ever been to in my life. It was at Fairfield Hall Croydon, is now known as the Stax tour and included among others Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Otis Rush, Wilson Picket and Arthur Conley and I really wish that I could remember who else. It was a real stand in the aisles and dance night unlike Rolling Stones etc which had been scream nights. In more recent years I have stooped to concerts and operas ( much easier on the ears) but last year my sister conned me into going to a David Essex concert and I couldn't believe that it was a sell out with screaming middle aged women (I tried to hide under my seat but she dragged me out again). Unfortunately Otis Redding died a few months after the tour but at least I saw him and the others at their best.

Irvine Drive

Just wondering - I know the police action is, of course, necessary but what happens to the people who own the house now. When I moved to Thanet 20 years ago I came from an area that had wheelie bins, though not recycling at that time, and really missed it. Everywhere I went (West Country, Wales, Midlands) had wheelie bins and alternate waste/recycling weeks. Nobody complained, they had got used to it, nobody had the feared vermin in the main waste bin and everybody felt good/righteous about the recycling. All I can say is wheel in the bins - and soon.

Show time

Manston Garden Club had it's annual show yesterday and what a marvellous show it was too. Thought of having a quick one at the Captain Digby but decided to wait until Joss Bay, but that was as busy as I remember from my youth and no chance of parking there either.
By the time we were approaching Broadstairs, I remembered Folk week, and decided a full detour was in order to get home and have a cup of tea.
We did try to watch the Perseids late last night but only managed to see one out of the corner of the eye - never seem to be looking in the right place - will have to try again tonight

Finished

Well, I managed to find time to finish the book but unfortunately the time I found was sleep time. There were , of course a lot of discussions on growing. We were all given sunflower seeds in March to grow on for judging on 1st September some have giants but not 7'10" like Zumi and some of us have scraggy little weeds like me - it's amazing the variation from the same packet of seeds. Tomatoes seem to be an all round disaster, inside and out, but the soft fruit is brilliant although much too early for showing next month. A few people are showing signs of potato blight at their home gardens as well as others reported at the allotments lately, which always provokes a lively argument on the uses of organic or chemical remedies and EU regulations. I know it's 'geeky' but if the weather is decent, as forecast, over the weekend the french tours and put put boats can go hang if we can dig and weed at last.

more rain!

I knew I should have planted rice

Simple things

I came home from the allotment this evening and as I parked my car on the drive I just sat there looking for a while. The intention is to sell off the Manston Road allotments in Ramsgate to use for housing and the money raised to be used to upgrade the rest of the allotments in Thanet. Allotments, nationally and locally, are now being recognised as an essential part of leisure and exercise for a large range of people as well as the production of fresh, frequently organic food and are to be encouraged. However one of the outcomes of the meeting was that allotments would be upgraded to a certain extent but with the good guy, bad guy act it was shown that although some of the money would be used the rest of it was to go into the council's coffers. The sale of that land should bring a lot more than Bury's Lowry but should only be used for allotments (some of which are in a dire state) and not for more councillors jollies.

Fuchsia

Why is it that you wait all season for things to come into bloom at the right time. So we gathered in my back garden to erect my new shed and the wind blew and it rained and rained. The shed is up but it was a really heroic effort from them both ( I kept finding an excuse to make tea, sandwiches, bake a cake, anything indoors). Maybe next weekend will be a bit drier so that I can fill it with all the stuff shoved in the greenhouse when the old one was taken/fell down so some men could spend an hour at that part of the wall it was too close to for them ( they will never know the trouble they caused).

Sheep wanted

I have not mown my back lawn for the last 3 weeks, tried it yesterday and the lawnmower doesn't want to know. Being female I look after the local and personal and let the gentlemen run the rest of the world, which means that I look at the person as well as their politics. I went to Dr Ladyman's surgery in 1999, where I explained the problems of a bill that was due to go through parliament shortly and even had surprising help from his assistant in convincing him. When I left he was in total agreement that it would be bad law. He then voted for it and I heard nothing from him ever again and despite his being my local MP I have never set eyes on him since. Roger Gale is not my local MP but I have seen him at meetings, even where he has had to explain himself for not being politically correct as he was not, strictly speaking, on his patch until boundary changes occur. I always vote but the local politicians make it very difficult, where is the Liberal voice. The Parish councils are not politically aligned at the moment and I hope that doesn't change if Ramsgate should be daft enough to exchange it's Charter for a parish council. I know that there is a lot wrong with TDC but I think the tendency to blame it on their politics shows a short memory.

Not a bad effort - but could do better

I thought my beans were good but there were a lot that were better. Luckily I planted my runner beans exceptionally late this year and they are just beginning to crop really well. I lost all of my tomatoes at the allotment due to tomato blight which surprised me by spreading to the courgette plants but I had more or less finished harvesting them. So the only tomatoes I have are in the greenhouse and I am having to fight my way through enormous spiders and their webs to get at them, I have never seen so many before.

This is one of my favourite areas in the garden especially when the Canna is in full bloom, I have it in a pot and think it could do with going in a new bigger one next year. I seem to have lost a Lobelia Cardinalis which I expect was due to the drought, I just hope we have a decent amouunt of rain this winter. It's all hurting my head.

Local Plan

I have been really busy lately, garden club shows and coach trips to visit gardens etc. So much to do in the garden and on the allotment.
But like others I have also been following the Westwood housing trail including the meeting at Manston and the site planning meeting. I am fed up with the excuse 'Local Plan'. OK so it took 4 years to be completed but that was years ago, since then Westwood retail has been built. The councillors standing there could see the traffic that has been created since the 'Local Plan' was agreed. Is it set in stone? They can live in cloud cuckoo land if they want but people still won't walk, cycle or use buses, they will use cars and the centre of Thanet is not the place for more cars. The western outskirts are prepared for it, especially with the new East Kent Road so just change the 'Local Plan'.

Israel

I don't like to get controversial in public but every time I have listened to the news in the last 24 hours I have got angrier and angrier. Of course Israel's retaliation is disproportionate, why are we, yet again colluding with America. If they love Israel so much why not move it to California get it out of the Middle East and sort out everyones problems. America was prepared to denounce, help break up and sort out another 20th century created country; Yugoslavia. Israel is anther that needs the same. Israel deliberately bombed unarmed UN observers and nobody but Kofi Annan has the guts to say so. The reason, so that there is no one there to watch them massacre innocent civilians in the area.

Courgettes

Luckily we can still use hosepipes at the allotment but only for half an hour or to fill water butts. I use most of mine on the courgette plants but now have courgettes coming out of my ears and there are only so many things that can be done with them. I have given so many away that I think friends, neighbours and relatives have had enough too. I am now allowing a couple to grow into marrows for the show bench let's hope one is successful. I was there by 7.30 yesterday morning and couldn't believe when by 8.00 I could feel the heat and the sun burning my back yet again, but I am not complaining. ( Stupid American spellchecker doesn't like courgettes either).

This is probably my favourite part of the garden, even better once the Canna flowers, but I think next year some of the shrubs will have to be replaced by the Bishop of Llandaff.

Sitting in Clover

I managed to mow the lawns before the rain but seem to have a nasty plague of clover. I ordered broadband for my mother just over a month ago, she has still not received the modem. I have made several phone calls and sent several emails and eventually lost my temper and told them to cancel the order this was the reply:

Thank you for your email. We apologise for the delay in the response.

Unfortunately we are not able to cancel an entire contract due to the failure of Royal Mail to deliver the equipment package.

I rang them to try to make them understand that it was their customer service at fault but all they would do was insist that they send another modem. I give them until Friday....

I then decided that I would check my bank account as I was sure that it needed money moving. I have a 7 digit security number but the stupid system was asking me for the 8th digit, I tried 3 times and, of course locked it. Telephone again, eventually after several numbers and the music was told that nobody could unlock it or even look at it except at the branch and I would need ID. Luckily the bank was empty and it was easy to do but what a palaver.

Next was the dentist who had put a temporary filling in 5 weeks ago. He asked how it was and I said fine, no discomfort, no pain and I didn't look forward to the full filling. I couldn't believe it when he said that in that case as it looked good and firm he couldn't see any point in maybe causing me pain and discomfort so we could just forget it until it was a problem. (I thought nhs dentists got paid by piecework). What a lovely man.

I was so pleased by that I rushed to the allotment, dug up some beetroot took them home, cooked them and had a delicious beetroot sandwich. The perfect end to a rubbish day.

Tomorrow

She says she will definitely go tomorrow. But she has promised to move up to London tomorrow afternoon so at least I can manage a few hours on the allotment and might even come back for the second half of the England match.

An exciting weekend

What a lot of activity in Thanet this weekend.

I walked around Minster open Gardens on both Saturday and Sunday. It is the best opportunity to be nosey and either praise or criticise what other people do to their gardens ( always praise to their face ,of course!). Funnily enough it is nearly always the smaller gardens that are more creative and interesting, I only saw one very large one that was good but he had split it into several areas so that one could never see it all at the same time. There is nothing exciting about a vast expanse of lawn with shrubs around the edge. I must get some Sisyrinchium, they were everywhere but so pretty.

And then there was Cliffsend Garden Club Summer Show, which was unfortunately not very well attended and it is such a shame when so much work goes into staging these shows.

My sister is staying with me for a few days and for some bizarre reason got bored with gardens, so I dropped her and my daughter off in Broadstairs so that they could do girlie things like hairdressers and shopping. That meant going past the airport several times and there were a lot of planes around. Watching the Red Arrows land and park is a beautiful sight. The back-up team stands to attention as soon as they land and the parking sequence is perfectly timed like a dance.

Half way

Well the rest of a nearly full packet of Qualcast mower blades and gallons of perspiration later, I deserve this cup of tea. But I stayed too long and although I arrived home before midday I still got burnt. My daughter was just thinking of getting up at that time, along with prize headache, so she missed out again (her idea of a tan will never materialise as it was then too hot to go out).

I invited guests for dinner last night and had already bought a joint but cooking it with accompaniments involved me running from the kitchen after every 10 minutes and splashing myself with cold water. But it was lovely to sit in the garden all evening chatting and imbibing even if this morning I had the headache. At least the numbers still added up at work this morning.

It has nearly cooled down enough for me to go and tackle the front lawn now(once the Archers has finished). It is about 2 foot high as it is full of spring bulbs that can't be mowed until June so it may be a bit every day this week.

Links

Well, after the honour of being added to Thanet Blog List I decided to try adding it as a link. I got very hot and bothered and had to have several tries but got there in the end. I think it might be the only one, even though I enjoy most of the other bloggers. Skin of Stars said I had to "get down and dirty with the code" but I think I will just get dirty with my compost instead, it's easier.

And anyway why do I keep going on about my loud and brash summer gladioli when the dainty, little late sping flowering Gladiolus byzantinus has suddenly produced it's pretty deep magenta flowers with the onset of this lovely weather we are having.

Yesterday, when I got back from work, I suggested to my daughter that we go back to the allotment. I knew that I might be pushing my luck and I was right, so I took her to the station as she felt London was calling for a couple of days.
